Bendis was a fellow Browncoat who fought in the war with Malcolm Reynolds and Zoë Alleyne Washburne in the Battle of Serenity Valley. The long-lasting battle had a negative impact on him, and when he was supposed to lay down covering fire for Mal and Zoë, he simply froze up due to fear. Moments later, Mal brought him around and convinced him that they would not die, but shortly afterward they were ordered to surrender when overwhelming Alliance forces arrived. Just as their unit was ordered to surrender, Bendis was killed by Alliance forces.
