The Brutus was a passenger vessel belonging to the Orion Cruiser Line. Her captain was known to boast that she was the best ship in the 'Verse. Shepherd Book considered boarding the Brutus for his trip off Persephone, but ultimately selected the Firefly-class transport ship, Serenity.

Rewatch pilot episode. The man speaking with Book may not be her captain and instead a member of her crew (like Kaylee). In the Big Damn Film Serenity, Kaylee tells Simon to talk to the captain and not the Barker. This man was likely "the barker".
