Canton was a town on Higgins' Moon, where Jayne Cobb was regarded as the Hero of Canton.

- Given the heavy Chinese culture influence in the show, it is likely that the town is named after the former anglicization of the province of Guangdong. "Canton" is the origin for the adjective "Cantonese".
- Canton is also the term for a political district, essentially states but derived from the French term meaning "corner" or "district". It is also the name for several locations in China.
