Earth-That-Was (Latin: Terra) was the original home of all humans. A series of events led to the mass exodus of Earth's population. The Earth fleet left Earth founding a new civilization in a new star system. Many of the facts about "Earth-That-Was" have been lost to the pages of history.
Authentic Earth artifacts are prized collector’s items and are extremely valuable. Durran Haymer had a collection of ancient artifacts from "Earth-That-Was". Adelai Niska also had an original Tiffany lamp.
Simon Tam appears to be knowledgeable about "Earth-That-Was", comparing Mudders and Mudder's Milk to the civilization of ancient Egypt.
In the Return to Earth-That-Was arc of the comics, Serenity travels through an Alliance portal and lands on Earth-That-Was. Contrary to long-standing belief, the planet remains habitable and is home to human descendants of those who were left behind. The crew discovers that Earth is not empty, but its survivors—referred to by the crew as "Earthers"—are wary and self-sufficient, having rebuilt their lives without reliance on advanced technology. These Earthers are deeply distrustful of outsiders, especially those who bring technology whom they call Infernia, which they blame for the devastation that led to Earth’s collapse. Their suspicion is heightened by recurring raids from off-world scavengers, who exploit the planet's resources using advanced tech. Because the Serenity crew arrives in a spaceship and uses similar tools, the Earthers initially see them as no different from the scavengers. With the help of Wash-bot, a robotic replica of the late pilot Wash, the crew navigates this hostile environment and eventually finds the ruins of Washburne Industries, once run by Wash’s ancestors.
Myths[]
"When she was born she had no sky. She was open, inviting, and the stars would rush into her, through the skin of her, making the oceans boil with sensation. When she could endure no more ecstasy, she puffed up her cheeks and blew out the sky." —An oral tradition of Saffron’s people
