This board game was released in 2013 by Gale Force Nine, under license from 20th Century Fox. As of early 2016, there are two board expansions, "Blue Sun" and "Kalidasa", two further deck expansions, "Crime & Punishment" and "Breakin' Atmo", one rules and ships expansion "Pirates and Bounty Hunters", and two more ships, "Esmeralda" and "Jetwash". A third ship expansion "Artful Dodger" is also available but included in some packaged versions of the game by default.
The basic game board involves a number of planets and systems dealt with on the show, including both Central and Rim planets. The players each command a ship, a Firefly Class, and undertake jobs to make and scavenge the means to keep flying. The objective, in general, is to complete enough missions without getting nabbed by the Law or eaten by the Reavers, and both luck and skill play considerable roles.
The unexpanded game is designed for two to four players, with a solo adaptation also possible. A game session is typically expected to last somewhere around or just over two hours. With expansions it is theoretically possible to have a mammoth game with up to nine players, and such a game session would likely run significantly longer than the two hour norm.
The box set for Firefly: The Game contains board, cards, tokens, dice, plastic ships and the 18-page rulebook.
