Elder Gommen was the leader of a township on Triumph, head of a group of the Triumph Settlers. The township was harried by a troublesome group of bandits, so the elder hired Malcolm Reynolds and the crew of Serenity as mercenaries in order to apprehend them. Saffron told Mal when he discovered her stowed away on Serenity that Elder Gommen had sent her to be his wife, in payment for the crew's work. [1]
