Mandarin was one of the dominant languages of the Union of Allied Planets and was spoken along with the English language. The variant spoken in the future of Firefly and Serenity is heavily accented and has drifted considerably from 20th century Mandarin; Chinese viewers frequently comment that the Mandarin used in the show is unintelligible.
