Patience, an elderly woman, was the matriarchal leader of the backwater moon Whitefall, and was notorious for having previously shot Malcolm Reynolds. Despite this, Mal took the crew to her in order to shift some troubling cargo contained nutritional/immunization bars he salvaged from a derelict Alliance ship. Once she passed over the money and he told her the location of where he stashed the cargo, Patience took the opportunity to turn on him and take back her cash. However, Jayne had secretly taken out of one of her snipers and commandeered his rifle, helping Mal and Zoe dispatch her gang. Mal then shot the horse she was hiding behind, causing it to fall and pin her. Mal took back his money, reminding her that when he does a job he always gets paid.
Patience was most likely killed by the Operative to prevent the Serenity crew from finding any kind of shelter. Mal discovered that many of his contacts were murdered when he summoned their Wave feeds.
