Overview[]

Persephone is the second planet of the protostar Lux in the White Sun system. Discovered in 2040, S/2040(Lux)02 is closer to the border worlds than Sihnon or Londinium, and while considered a "civilized" planet by Alliance standards, is still home to a large slum population. Therefore, one could find both the pinnacle of high society and the depths of the criminal underworld amidst the planet's famously tiered societal structure.

Badger's base of operations is located here. Before joining the Serenity crew, Shepherd Book had been living on Persephone at the Southdown Abbey.

Simon and River Tam, Shepherd Book, and Lawrence Dobson were picked up here from the Eavesdown Docks.[3] The planet was also the site of a swordfighting duel between Malcolm Reynolds and Atherton Wing.[4]

Jayne Cobb and Temperance McCloud met at a dive bar on Persephone, when the former was a kid. Already making a name for himself as a mercenary in Eavesdown, Jayne agreed to do a job for her, needing the credits for his mother to cover medical bills for his sick brother, Matty.[5]

Government[]

Persephone, like all planets under the authority of the Alliance, is governed by a planetary Governor. It is unknown what the electoral rules are on Persephone and therefore how governors are elected.

Alliance Day[]

Union of Allied Planets

Every year "Persephonites" that support Unification celebrate the planet's entry into the Union of Allied Planets.

Alliance Day and Unification Day are public holidays, with many people taking the day off of work to partake in the festivities (usually by drinking at their local pub, bar or tavern).[6]

Trivia[]

  • Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Her Roman equivalent is Proserpina, highlighting a link with prosperity. She is the wife of Hades (Pluto). She is associated with the spring and vegetation, and is also known as the "Queen of the Underworld".
  • It was the former capital of the Independent Planets during the Unification War.
