Stern was a member of the crew of the SS Walden. Stern was present among the crew during their successful salvage mission on Ita moon, and remained aboard the Walden when their captain, the captain's mate, Jesse, Billy, and another armed crewman ambushed Malcolm Reynolds aboard Serenity. The captain's plan was for Stern to help Jesse pilot the stolen vessel, but this never happened, as they were stopped by Reynolds.
