The man that flies Serenity is Hoban "Wash" Washburn. Wash is a kind, unassuming, and playful guy. His marriage to Zoë doesn't make a lot of sense at first glance, all the sense in the world the longer you look. Wash continues to fly Serenity for one reason -- to be close to his wife and guarantee her safety in what way he can. He's a pilot of extraordinary ability, and though he'd prefer a more stable life -- one his talents could easily provide he and Zoë in the Core -- he doesn't complain... much.
